Our history
At Yetzer, we are a company that's run on trust!
Our family-owned and operated business began in 1941 when Wilfred R. Yetzer, one of Minnesota’s first certified flooring installers, founded Yetzer Home Store and Flooring in Waconia, MN. During WWII, Will’s mother successfully ran Yetzer while all her sons were off fighting. Despite only having a fourth-grade education, she rose to the challenge, traveling to the Twin Cities to buy merchandise. This was particularly difficult considering that everything was being rationed at the time, but she always managed to find merchants to sell to her. Even with merchandise in tight supply, we kept our doors open throughout the 1940s. After the war, in addition to flooring, Yetzer sold appliances and small electronics for a few years, before expanding to furniture.
During the 60s and 70s, Will’s brother Stan, a trained flooring installer, took over as Yetzer store manager after their other brother, John, left to start his own furniture company. Under Will’s ownership and Stan’s management, Yetzer became the “go-to” store for homeowners throughout the western Twin Cities. Their commitment to quality products and service contributed to Yetzer's growing reputation for honest prices and reliable service. Will knew that the best way to satisfy his clients was to make sure his own staff was happy. So, he started a profit-sharing plan for his employees and provided them great health insurance, almost unheard of at that time for a small business. This personalized attention to both customers and staff still continues today.
Yetzer's reputation for honest prices and unparalleled service grew throughout the 80s and 90s when Stan’s son Steve became store manager in 1983 and then purchased Yetzer in 1988. In 2000, we expanded our warehouse from 500 to 5000 square feet and tripled the display space for our flooring solutions and window treatments. We expanded again in 2012.
In December 2015, Yetzer was purchased by Thomas Wiest, who brings over 30 years of retail experience, and has maintained the integrity of the Yetzer name that Will first introduced in 1941. A true pillar of Waconia and the surrounding area, Will passed away in 2016 at the young age of 99. His commitment to quality flooring and décor solutions, authentic home design, and sincere customer service remains as present as ever.
